Description
In the rolling landscape of Backcountry Greenwich, a 1940s residence, originally conceived in the spirit of Georgian-style architecture, has undergone a masterful transformation. This comprehensive Greenwich country house renovation preserves the home's traditional charm while introducing the spatial refinement and technological sophistication demanded by contemporary living.
Originally designed with hints of 18th-century English country homes, the house possessed moments of architectural grace. However, poorly conceived additions, deteriorating materials, and outdated interiors diminished its legacy. Charles Hilton Architects was commissioned to conduct a sweeping renovation, uniting past and present through the lens of custom residential architecture.
Exterior Enhancements Rooted in Historical IntegrityThe restoration began with essential upgrades: a new slate roof, historically appropriate reproduction windows, and solid wood doors that respect the home’s Georgian heritage. What seemed like a routine improvement soon revealed deeper architectural challenges. Upon removal of the original windows, the walls expected to be veneer stone typical of 1940s construction were found to be solid masonry. While indicative of premium craftsmanship, these dense walls complicated the installation of modern mechanical systems and spray foam insulation. The solution required furring-in every exterior wall to preserve comfort without compromising historical authenticity.
The home’s exterior evolved with a series of strategic additions. A new English conservatory and breakfast room, positioned on the eastern side of the house, brings in morning light and creates a natural extension between the kitchen and the outdoor patio. More than functional, the conservatory animates what was once an uninspired wing, offering architectural relief and enhancing the garden-side façade.
Nearby, a newly constructed one-and-a-half-story mudroom annex replaces a disjointed wooden breezeway. Built in carefully matched stone, the annex connects the main house to the garage and a guest suite above. Designed as a multi-functional node, it now serves as a practical and aesthetic hinge between key elements of the home. Subtle but significant details abound. Bronze railings, newly crafted dormer trim, and a redesigned front entry stoop were all orchestrated to elevate the home's classical expression.
Interiors That Blend Classical Craft with Modern ComfortInside, the transformation is equally extensive. Outdated finishes and awkward layouts gave way to rooms of character and clarity. The formal living and dining rooms, once burdened by garish palettes and tired fittings, now exude a restrained elegance. Layered paneling, refined moldings, and considered symmetry restore a sense of timelessness.
A cozy library and home office just off the living room underwent a complete reimagining. Built-in shelving and millwork provide storage and visual structure, while a rebuilt semicircular bay anchors the space with a 180-degree custom desk overlooking the gardens. This intimate room exemplifies the project’s commitment to balancing daily function with design excellence.
One of the most striking changes is found in the master suite. A former second-floor study was transformed into a tranquil ensuite bath featuring a double vanity with Carrara marble countertops, a gracefully arched soaking tub niche, and traditional cabinetry. Ingeniously, the existing chimney allowed the room’s original fireplace to be reversed to face into the master bedroom, where it now enhances a new sitting area framed by a broad arched opening and natural light.
Seamless Transitions Between Tradition and TechnologyThroughout the home, hand-finished walnut floors unify new and old spaces with warmth and richness. Nowhere is the balance between heritage and modernity more apparent than in the kitchen and family room. A broad, marble-topped island creates an open connection between the two rooms. Traditional white cabinetry contrasts beautifully with the walnut flooring, while a breakfast bar provides casual seating and a serving area ideal for entertaining.
While traditional in appearance, the kitchen is fully outfitted with state-of-the-art appliances and conveniences, mirroring the project as a whole: classical in form yet fully attuned to 21st-century life.
A Case Study in Thoughtful Historic Home RestorationThis project stands as a testament to the enduring value of architectural stewardship. Through precise detailing, sensitive interventions, and an unwavering commitment to design integrity, this historic home restoration preserves the essence of a bygone era while ushering it gracefully into the present.
