- AMERICAN BRICK GEORGIAN -
Description
This stately Georgian residence, originally built in 1942, began as a central block flanked by a modest service wing and a utilitarian kitchen connector. While the original structure possessed architectural merit rooted in classical symmetry and scale, it lacked the full compositional completeness often found in traditional Georgian estates. Tasked with elevating the home’s design while honoring its origins, Charles Hilton Architects undertook a comprehensive renovation that exemplifies the best of custom residential architecture.
Guided by a commitment to stylistic fidelity, fine materials, and exacting craftsmanship, the renovation evolved from a targeted interior update into a complete architectural rebalancing. The result is a seamless integration of historic elegance with contemporary comfort, an enduring model for luxury home restoration.
Thoughtful Interior Renovations Rooted in Classical DesignThe renovation began with strategic interventions to improve daily function and interior finishes. The existing kitchen was completely reimagined and expanded to accommodate modern living while retaining a traditional Georgian aesthetic. A graceful interior arcade, introduced within the new kitchen layout, subtly delineates the cooking and dining areas, creating rhythm, formality, and an elegant procession through space.
Upstairs, the master bath was transformed into a private sanctuary. A new pedimented bay was added to the garden façade, featuring a classically inspired limestone portico that expands the interior space and enhances the exterior architecture. These elements, the pediments, pilasters, and natural stone, evoke timeless Georgian character while responding to the scale of the home and its surrounding gardens.
As the project progressed, the client recognized the importance of architectural balance. This realization led to the addition of a new western wing, completing the home’s symmetrical composition.
A Seamlessly Integrated New Wing for Living and EntertainingDesigned with deference to the original structure, the western wing mirrors the residence’s Georgian architectural style in both proportion and detailing. It adds substantial new space, including guest suites and areas for entertaining, without compromising the home’s overall scale or rhythm.
In the newly added Sunroom, light and landscape become central elements of the design. French doors with elliptical fanlights open to the gardens, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior. A decorative trellis motif is expressed through a sophisticated forced-perspective lattice treatment, adding depth and visual interest while echoing garden architecture.
Adjacent, the oak-paneled Drawing Room introduces a refined atmosphere for formal gatherings. A bay of arched-top windows angles outward, offering sweeping views and natural illumination to the space. At its heart, a bespoke George III–style marble mantel serves as a focal point, an heirloom-quality piece that underscores the home’s commitment to classical detailing and enduring materials.
Classical Outbuildings Enrich the Estate's Architectural LegacyClassical Outbuildings Enrich the Estate's Architectural Legacy In keeping with the principles of classical home design, the estate’s transformation extended beyond the main residence. Over time, a collection of new accessory structures was thoughtfully added to enrich the architectural language of the property and enhance its functionality.
These include a classically detailed entry gate, a pool house executed in the Georgian vocabulary, a working greenhouse, and a gracefully proportioned garden pavilion. Each element is scaled, detailed, and oriented to reinforce the sense of place, offering a harmonious transition between built form and cultivated landscape.
These buildings, while modest in footprint, reflect the same care and craftsmanship as the main house, further anchoring the estate in its architectural and horticultural context.
A Model of Balanced Design and Enduring CraftsmanshipThis project stands as a compelling example of Georgian residence renovation carried out with precision, restraint, and artistry. Every intervention, from the limestone portico and fanlight-capped doors to the sun-drenched trellis work and paneled interiors, serves to elevate the residence while honoring its architectural roots.
By maintaining a rigorous commitment to classical principles and the highest standards of construction, this home has been both restored and reimagined, ensuring its place among the most distinguished examples of custom residential architecture in Greenwich and beyond.
