A Georgian Revival Brick Home in Historic Khakum Wood Association

Set within the prestigious Khakum Wood neighborhood of Greenwich, Connecticut, master planned by the legendary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, this 7,000-square-foot custom brick home was envisioned as a long-term residence for a young and growing family. The owners requested we craft a design that would both honor the neighborhood’s architectural heritage and fulfill their aspirations for a refined yet livable homestead.

The chosen style, Georgian Revival architecture, resonates deeply with the character of the community, where early 20th-century Georgian and Tudor Revival homes establish a storied precedent. Known for its symmetry, austerity, and understated elegance, the Georgian Revival vocabulary provided the ideal balance between timeless architectural character and the family’s desire for a home designed for modern living.

A Classical Façade with Subtle Ornamentation

At the heart of the front elevation, a two-story central gable announces the entry with quiet grandeur. A semi-circular portico, supported by attenuated pilasters and crowned with a delicately detailed fanlight, frames the front door as a focal point. Above, a second-story Palladian window completes the composition, adding rhythm and hierarchy to the symmetrical façade.

In keeping with the Georgian tradition, additional exterior ornamentation remains measured and refined. A simplified Corinthian entablature encircles the residence, each modillion casting crisp shadows that animate the brickwork without overwhelming it. The masonry itself is a central feature: handmade, oversized bricks laid in Flemish bond recall the craftsmanship of the 18th century while visually softening and scaling the home’s handsome exteriors.

Interiors Rooted in Tradition, Enhanced by Modern Comfort

Inside, the architectural language continues with period-inspired detailing arched openings, paneled walls, and hand-crafted oak floors that convey a sense of continuity with the home’s Georgian Revival identity. Yet this residence is far from a museum piece. Integrating modern residential technologies, the design incorporates state-of-the-art LED lighting and geothermal systems, ensuring sustainable performance and everyday comfort.

The interiors balance formality with warmth, offering multiple working fireplaces to infuse spaces with an inviting glow. Each room underscores the commitment to harmonizing tradition with the conveniences of modern living.

Landscape Design Inspired by the English Picturesque

Designing the grounds within an Olmsted-planned neighborhood required a similarly thoughtful approach. Guided by the English picturesque tradition that informed Olmsted’s own work, the landscape was conceived as a seamless extension of the architecture.

At the rear of the residence, a sweeping lawn framed by mature trees provides both privacy and serenity. A bluestone terrace extends from the house, creating a graceful outdoor living space that transitions into a winding path leading to the pool and pavilion.

Constructed of teak with traditional timber framing, the pavilion embodies a rustic retreat, adorned with decorative brackets and expressive rafter tails. Its gently curving yellow cedar shingle roof adds sculptural character while providing shelter from summer sun or sudden rain, reinforcing the home’s balance of utility and artistry.

A Study in Craftsmanship and Continuity

Every element of this residence, from its hand-laid brick to its thoughtfully composed grounds, demonstrates the enduring value of luxury residential design rooted in expert craftsmanship. By aligning the home with the architectural traditions of Khakum Wood while integrating sustainable technologies and contemporary comforts, Charles Hilton Architects created a property that feels at once timeless and tailored to modern life.

This Georgian Revival brick home is not merely a place to live, but a generational homestead, an architecture of permanence and grace designed to grow with the family it serves

Stedila Design | Highland Design Gardens | Hobbs Inc

“We hired Charles Hilton Architects to design our home in Greenwich in 2013 and we cannot recommend them highly enough. We chose to work with Chuck because we love how his Georgian homes have a unique, signature style that is still in keeping with classical architecture. At our initial meeting, we told Chuck we were hoping to build a cheerful family home in a traditional, American Georgian style. Chuck listened to all of our priorities, and the home he designed for us is exactly what we had envisioned – symmetrical and beautifully proportioned on the exterior, with a slightly more modern, open feel on the interior.

Chuck brought a calm, professional demeanor and an incredible depth of knowledge to every meeting. His hands on approach helped to smoothly steer the course of the project from the beginning. Chuck was always able answer our questions on a wide range of topics – from architectural history to the latest green technologies such as LED lighting and geothermal heating and cooling systems.

Chuck has assembled a talented team of architects with a diverse array of design specialties. Daniel Pardy’s interior details provide both aesthetic interest and a sense of balance inside our home. Throughout the project Nick Rotondi frequently dropped off samples of materials, carefully checked to make sure the production of the house met the specifications outlined in the shop drawings, and was available seven days a week to answer questions. The attention and time that Chuck and his colleagues gave us helped us to forge a personal relationship that made the process of designing our home both collaborative and enjoyable. There was no request they could not accommodate, and a number of times, they came back to us with a proposal that was superior to our request. From the start to the end of our project we benefited from the personalized and professional approach at Charles Hilton Architects.

We recently moved into our beautiful new home and it is perfect for our family. The plans Charles Hilton Architects designed for us led to the creation of a serene and comfortable home. We are so grateful for the level of thought and care they put into our project, and we hope to enjoy our home for many, many years to come!”

“I have had the pleasure of working with Chuck on a large number of prestigious projects in both Fairfield and Westchester counties. As a sales representative from O&G industries where we fabricator and import all varieties of natural stone and also distributor of clay brick products, it’s very important to have a professional such as Chuck to ensure a successful project. There's a reason why Chuck is regarded to be in rarified air as an architect.”

“I have worked with Charles Hilton on about 20 different projects over the past 10 years, providing consulting on roofing, waterproofing, and related building envelope issues. He and his team are absolutely top-notch when it comes to attention to detail, and their drawings are among the most complete and comprehensive that I have seen. They consistently go above and beyond to make sure that their projects are not only aesthetically superior but also practical and durable. They deliver outstanding value to their clients, and I always welcome the opportunity to work with them since I know they will deliver a successful project.”
